Marloes grew up in a village near Utrecht, the Netherlands. She stayed here to obtain her Bachelor degree in Biomedical Sciences and Master degree in Cancer, Stem Cells and Developmental Biology (CSND) at Utrecht University. For her Master’s, she first worked on cell biology at the Hubrecht Institute, after which she explored the world of epigenetics in the lab of Prof. Wolf Reik in Cambridge, UK. This internship piqued her interest in epigenetic regulation of embryonic development. To further pursue this topic, she joined the lab of Prof. Alexander van Oudenaarden for her PhD, again at the Hubrecht Institute. Here, she worked on in vitro models of mammalian development, and she combined these models with the development of new single-cell techniques, profiling both the chromatin landscape and gene expression during differentiation. Marloes decided to join the Vastenhouw lab in 2024 as a postdoc, aiming to study how transcription regulation is orchestrated.

Outside of science, she enjoys reading, baking, meeting with friends, travelling and exploring nature.
